Consumer segmentation for food waste prevention

We supported a regional Behavioral Science Working Group - composed of food waste experts and led by FAO and Busara - to develop a consumer segmentation approach aimed at reducing household food waste.

The project involved:

Reviewing existing literature and interventions on household food waste.

Developing a standardized consumer segmentation guide using the MOA (Motivation-Opportunity-Ability) model.

Creating a geographically neutral profiling questionnaire to inform the design of tailored intervention strategies.

This work aimed to provide government policymakers with an evidence-based tool to design effective, scalable food waste interventions tailored to different consumer behaviors, motivations, and contexts.
